I have been watching a lot of movies on our "Video on Demand" channel. I watched one of Mike Leigh's typical tough, humane, no-easy-answers movies (All or Nothing) and Eight Women which I LOVED, and then I watched a nice easy melodrama, that is, White Oleander. The main reason I watched it was because I had read so many things about Alison Lohman's "breakout" performance, but there was something too thin about her, too gauzy. She suffered too beautifully. Michelle Pfeiffer, on the other hand, was fierce and mesmerizing. Whether she meant to or not, she captured perfectly what I find distasteful about a lot of strict moral relativism -- when you act as though you live in a vacuum, you can hurt everyone else around you, and no, it's not always "their problem."
And that Cole Hauser dude was hot.

I am feeling guilty that I'm sort of looking forward to Trish going out of town for 3 days this weekend, so I can order all those on-demands that she wouldn't at all be interested in. First up, Far From Heaven, then Y Tu Mama Tambien.
