Jun. 21st, 2003

It's summer solstice, and it feels like it. The air was still pleasant when I went to the first farmer's market, but by the time I got to the second one everything was baking.

I hear Marcel playing with the rattly twine balls that hang from the cat tree in the other room. He's the only one who plays with them. I love that sound.

What I got at the market(s):

Leeks
Red new potatoes
Butter lettuce
Red oak lettuce
Eggplant
Japanese eggplant
Purslane
Arugula
Some beautiful blooming lemon and mint basil stems, now in water
Fat ripe tomatoes for mom because she loves them
Figs
Peaches
Blackberries
A huge bunch of sorrel
More things I can't remember just now

We're going out to the jenny farm, but I don't know whether that's today or tomorrow yet.

Minou is asleep in Jeff's chair. Ellie Mae is asleep under Jeff's chair. Jeff is asleep in the bed. Orb is asleep on the floor by the bed. There are no more rattly noises, so I'm guessing Marcel is asleep in the front window. Vasily and Nora, outside, doubtless asleep. I'm the only one awake, and all I can hear is a mockingbird imitating a cardinal, the quiet hum of my CPU, and possibly the grass in the front yard growing.
